The drain pump uses an impeller to force water through the drain hose. To fix it, remove the hose completely and flush it out. If you have a new dishwasher that runs a little more quietly, after a few minutes, you will be able to open the dishwasher and see that water has filled the bottom of the tub.

You need a little bit of water to remain in the bottom to make sure the pump seal remains moist. If the fault is being caused by something else then the odds are you’ll be unable to diagnose and fix the problem yourself and you should get in touch with a professional engineer. If not remember to turn the tap back again!
